History: Mai's life had started off rather well. She was born into a wealthy family, caused by the fact that her father was the man in charge of a multi-million dollar company. Her first few years were filled with whatever she wished to have - from dolls, toys, and stuffed animals to pretty clothing and decorations. The one thing she had never gotten though, no matter how much she asked, was friends. She grew up with no friends, being unable to leave the household without proper supervision. It was at the age of six that everything changed. Her parents died in a car crash which was labelled as an accident. This left Mai alone without friends to deal with it. She was sent off to live with her aunt and uncle, who would take over her father's company until she came of age. There was of course the money her parents had left behind, but neither she not her new guardians were allowed to touch it before her eighteenth birthday.
As she grew up she learned that the world wasn't fair and she couldn't always have what she wanted anymore. The life her parents had given her was nowhere close to the reality of things. Her aunt and uncle had taken over her father's company, and with no previous experience in the field, completely failed to upkeep the empire it had been. They did not care very much for Mai, and mostly left her to her own devices whenever they were there. After years of this, Mai was determined that there was a better life for her somewehre, and someday she would be able to have everything she wanted. However, to get everything she wanted required money, which required waiting until she was eighteen. That was something she wasn't planning on doing. Already at sixteen years of age she could easily have passed for a twenty year old - and that is exactly what she did. She pretended to be twenty years old and embarked on a luxury cruise ship that was to travel around the world. She got a job on the cruise at the duel monsters table, where she was to defeat as many of the rich people on board as possible. She did a great job at it too - she was undefeated the entire of the trip. She had finally found something she was good at, and she wasn't going to let it slip through her hands this time. She built up her own deck of Duel Monsters from cards won from opponents and bought from the ship's store, and soon became known as a powerful duelist.
This went on for four years. Four years she worked on the ship, duelling for a living. She then decided that she had had enough of duelling for other people, and quit, deciding to go on her own tour of the world, but on her own terms. Mai went around from tournament to tournament, building herself a reputation under the name Madame Butterfly. Amateur tournaments became much too easy for her, and yet she had no choice but to participate in them. Invitations to more advanced tournaments seemed to flee her. Until around four years later when she obtained an invitation to Duelist Kingdom.
In her mind she was in the best position to win the tournament - how could she not? She had dominated every where else she had been. Apparently fate had decided otherwise though. Her first few duels were quite simple - quite amateur at best. And then he came along. Mai had never been one to underestimate a foe, and with her 'physic' trick, she was positive she would win. Overconfidant above all, she started the duel with confidance and arrogance. In the end though, her overconfidance was her own downfall. This loss - her first in around three years - made her realize that perhaps there was more out there than just money and fame. She later went on to somewhat befriend the same boy that had defeated her. At that time that was what he was. Nothing but a boy. He came to become more than that. A partner, of sorts. Joey Wheeler had somehow sneaked his way into her heart and melted her heart of ice. She started to see things from a different manner, and although she ended but third at Duelist Kingdom, she did not feel bad about it. It only gave her more willpower to become a stronger duelist.

Waking up early had never really been a forte for a certain blond-haired duellist. Especially not for school. The last thing he wanted was to get out of bed and sit all day listening to some pointless lessons about grammar and algebra. If only they would teach something like Duelling tricks, or anything related to Duelling, then maybe less kids would skip classes and more would possibly graduate. What a second. Why would Joey Wheeler, not exactly the sharpest knife in drawer care the least bit about how many kids graduated? He probably wouldn't be had it not been for his mother and sister, Serenity. He wanted to make them proud to say he was their son/brother, and not just by winning duels against...say...Seto Kaiba? [not that he really did....yet] If it was something that his mom would be proud of, he'd do it. His dad never took the time to congratulate his son on anything, since he was far too busy playing poker and betting what little scraps of money they actually had.
The alarm went off at that precise moment, bursting Joey's dream bubble. "Stupid alarm! Couldn't you give me 5 minutes more?? Maybe I could replace it with Time Wizard....he'd let me sleep all I want..." the blond said, talking to himself. At least no one who'd care was there to hear him. It would have been quite a difficulty to come up with something on the spot as to why he was talking to himself. Again. Already he had trouble coming up with good things to say about normal stuff, and it cetainly wouldn't have helped had he have to think about something now, so early in the morning. Maybe he should just blame it on the shrimp...it could work.
'Why are you talking to yourself Joey?'
'the shrimp made me do it!'
That sounded convincing...it was now officially Joey's excuse for talking to himself at random times!
Sitting on the edge of bed as he rubbed his eyes, Joey went through his day's schedule in his mind. School, lunch, school, after-school snack, hanging out with Yug and everyone else, snack, check on Serenity, supper, hang out with Yug again, snack, find duelling opponet, snack, duel, snack, snack, snack, bed...midnight snack. It seemed perfect to him. The more snack he added in the happier his day would be. Maybe he would have to miss one snack he was planning after his duel, depending on how long it was going to last. Though knowing most duellist in town, the duel wouldn't last longer than...say...5 minutes tops? If he really wanted he could probably finish it off in 4, but what would be the use to humiliate a kid up to that level? He'd be nice and make it last 5.
The eldest Wheeler child stood up and started to put on the horrid thing they called a uniform at his school. Blue vest and blue pants....couldn't it at least have been green? At least green matched his eyes...somewhat...unlike the dark blue of the uniform. Why did he even care about weither it matched his eyes or not? He was going to be late for school! Joey started to speed things up a little, hurrying to the kitchen and making himself some toast. He hurridly ate, finished off everything he had to, and grabbed his deck. Without even saying good-bye to his father, the blond rushed out of the door and started running down the street.
Minutes later, Joey reached the front entrance of Domino High School. He rushed up the stairs, through the doors and down the hallway toward the morning's very first class. The moment his feet passed the doorframe the bell rang, announcing the beginning of the lesson. "You've lucked out yet again, Mr.Wheeler. Take your spot." the teacher told him. Joey couldn't do much more than smirk. He headed for his seat and sat down, preparing for a boring lesson.
An entire lesson later, Joey was struggling to stay awake. 'Come on clock, move your little hands a little faster...' Joey thought staring at the clock. Only two more minutes....one...Finally the bell rang. Joey leapt to his feet, grabbed his books and headed out of the classroom. About time too. Walking down the crowded hallway, Joey thought about the rest of the day's schedule. Only one more class before lunch. One more class to go through...suddenly, out of nowhere [it seemed to Joey] this kid ran into him. "Watch where you're going punk!" He said staring at the kid. He had never seen him before, but then again Joey barely knew a quarter of the entire school population.
