History:
Marik Ishtar is a victim of circumstance. Born into a family known as Tomb Keepers, it was their sole duty to guard the resting place of the pharaoh. They held two of the Sennnen item – the Rod and the Necklace – which were passed onto Marik and his elder sister, Ishizu, respectively. Kept underground, Marik and his sister were forbidden to go above ground. Their father, strict and dedicated to their duty as Tomb Keepers, correctly believed that the sites of the normal world would make Marik divert from his task fated to him from his heritage. Marik was forced to undergo the ritual to instate him as a full Tomb Keeper, a ritual of immense pain. The Pharaoh’s memory, the stone tablet, was carved into Marik’s back. In the searing trauma, Marik’s sanity broke. It was here that Yami no Marik was born. An alter ego created from shear hatred, he was a force to be reckoned with, but one that slept for nearly a year before he resurfaced.
Marik’s father’s fears that the surface world would ruin Marik’s predetermined fate were correct. With Ishizu, Marik snuck out, just to see the world. Fascinated by the world, his hatred for his duty intensified. They returned, albeit reluctant, only to find they had been caught. Marik’s father attempted to kill Rishard for having let them go. The effect of such an intention was violent. Yami no Marik rose to the forefront, taking control of Marik’s body. He retrieved the Millennium Rod and with it, murdered his father. Before further damage could escalate, Richard managed to seal away Yami Marik and return Marik to normal.
Driven by hatred for a Pharaoh he had to serve but had never met, led to believe the Pharaoh was responsible for his father’s death, and mad for the life that had been taken from him before he’d been born, Marik traveled to Japan to find him. Leading the Rare Hunters/Ghouls and equipped with two God cards, Marik hoped to obtain the last of the set to gain the title of Pharaoh and set his family free from their duty. He hoped to get revenged on the Pharaoh as well. Hacking Battle City’s main computer, Marik entered himself and many of the Ghouls into the tournament. Loosing Slifer the Sky Dragon to Yugi Mouto, Marik struck a deal with Yami Bakura and the two of them – as well as Rishard – managed to get into the quarter finals. Here, Marik wore the façade of Namu while Rishard pretended to be Marik.
All the plans, however, snapped with Marik. Having used a fake God card in a duel with Jounouchi, Rishard was struck down and put into a coma. Without Rishard to keep Marik in check, he lost control and the alter-ego kept sealed for so long was released. Desiring only to kill Yugi and hurt everyone in the way, Yami Marik is a danger to everyone. Desperate, Marik’s soul teams up with Yami Bakura once again to try and reclaim his body. The plans again fail when Yami Bakura loses the duel. Unable to do anything but watch his counterpart destroy, Marik is only saved when Rishard wakes from his coma. As Yami Yugi duels with Yami Marik, Marik accepts Rishard’s words and that he must accept his responsibilities. He is able to regain control of his body long enough to forfeit the duel. He gives both the God Card Ra and the Millenium Rod to Yami Yugi and displays the carvings on his back. With his duty fulfilled, Marik is able to return to Egypt to start a new life. Later, Marik again assisted the Pharaoh in moving on to the afterlife by delivering him to the place of the final fight.
In the time that has passed, Marik has returned to Japan with his family in hopes to stop the new threat. While his stability is endangered by returning, he hopes that those he has wronged can forgive him. He hopes he can find the self-redemption he believes he never fully achieved.
